BEES, WASPS, AND HORNETS IN CENTRAL FLORIDA

Here in Florida, stinging insects can be a big nuisance for most of the year. Our bee and wasp exterminators can help! The most common species we deal with in the Orlando area are:

  • Bald-faced hornets. These are black, have a white head, and can be particularly aggressive.
  • Bumblebees. Large, slow bees that have fuzzy yellow bodies. Usually docile.
  • Carpenter bees. Often confused for bumblebees, they are larger and chew through wood.
  • Cicada killer wasps. With amber-colored wings, these feed on cicadas.
  • Mud daubers. Thin-waisted insects that aren’t very aggressive and are known for their mud nests.
  • Paper wasps. These wasps have legs that hang in flight and can be aggressive.
  • Yellowjackets. Bright yellow stinging insects are aggressive, especially in the late summer and fall.

All wasps will defend their nests, but the Yellow Jackets and hornets in Central Florida and Orlando are the most aggressive. They can be distinguished from bees by their thin “waists.” Bees are thick-wasted. They fold their wings lengthwise when at rest. Like all wasps, yellow jackets prey on a variety of insects and other arthropods. Yellow jackets will also forage on foods that people eat, especially sweets and meats. The Orlando’s subtropical climate coupled with Disney, Univeral and other area theme parks and the outdoor way of life in Orlando and Central Florida, in general, provides the perfect stomping ground for aggressive yellow jackets foraging and being a real danger and urban nuisance.

While Yellow Jackets are considered beneficial insects, eating other insects, Orlando area yellow jackets can also can be extremely aggressive and dangerous in the vicinity of people and especially kids.  The yellow jacket colony will remain active for only one summer, after which the queens will fly away to start more colonies. The remaining ones die at the end of the summer, the nest is not reused.

HABITS:
Orlando Yellow Jackets usually nest in the sandy Orlando ground but will nest also in railroad ties, wall voids, and other above-ground locations. Especially in the Spring Orlando yellow jackets will feed on insects. Many homeowners see” bees” flying around their hedges. These “bees” are usually yellow jackets and are there to eat insects on the foliage. Targeted treatments with organic and natural materials ensure we get the target stinging insects without harming the environment and other non-target organisms.

In the fall, Yellow Jacket colonies have come the largest size, and foraging workers may be a serious nuisance as they search for food people eat or discarded food.

Although it may seem strange, yellow jackets are known to become more aggressive in the fall. Throughout the spring and summer, wasp populations continuously grow and they begin to outgrow their nests. Pair that with diminishing resources for food, and these stinging insects become a tad angrier and more aggressive than usual! Outdoor barbecues and picnics throughout Orlando become easy targets for yellow jackets, which can be dangerous for anyone allergic to their sting. To protect yourself and your family from these stinging insects, Call Envirosafe Pest Control of Orlando and we will exterminate these dangerous pests.
