Are There Bed Bugs in Orlando Hotels?
Short answer: sometimes, in every city on earth, and Orlando gets more visitors than almost anywhere in the United States. Bed bugs move with people and luggage, so the places people cycle through fastest are the places they turn up most: hotels, resorts, vacation rentals, timeshares, hostels, cruise-port shuttles and airport transfers. That is not a comment on any particular property. A five-star resort and a roadside motel are equally capable of picking up a bed bug from a guest who checked in yesterday.
What matters is not whether bed bugs exist in Orlando lodging. It is whether you spot them before you unpack, and whether you bring any home.
Check the room before you unpack
It takes two minutes and it is the single most useful thing a traveller can do.
- Leave your luggage in the bathroom or on the tiled entry, not on the bed or the carpet. Bathrooms are the least likely place in a room to harbour bed bugs.
- Pull back the sheets at the head of the bed and look along the mattress piping and seams. You are looking for small rust-coloured smears, dark specks like ground pepper, and pale translucent shed skins.
- Lift the mattress corner and check the box spring seam and the label area.
- Look at the headboard, particularly where it meets the wall. In hotels this is where they most often hide, because it is rarely moved.
- Check the seam of any upholstered chair and the nightstand drawer joint.
If you find anything, do not move to the room next door. Ask for a room on a different floor, and ask the property to inspect the original. Adjacent rooms share walls, and bed bugs travel through outlets, conduit and baseboard gaps.
Keep them from riding home with you
Use the luggage rack, away from the wall and the bed. Keep the suitcase zipped when you are not in it. Hard-sided luggage gives them fewer places to hide than fabric. When you get home, unpack in the garage or on a hard floor rather than on the bed, run everything washable through a hot wash and a hot dryer cycle (the dryer does the work, not the wash), and vacuum the empty suitcase before it goes back in the closet.
Whatever you do, do not put the suitcase on the bed when you walk in the door. That single habit is responsible for a large share of the residential bed bug calls we take in Central Florida.
How to tell it is bed bugs and not something else
People usually notice the bites first, which is unfortunate, because bites are the least reliable evidence. Reactions vary enormously between people, some show nothing at all, and plenty of what gets diagnosed as bed bug bites turns out to be fleas, mites or a skin reaction to something entirely different.
Look for the physical signs instead: dark faecal specks along seams and in cracks, rust-coloured smears on sheets, shed skins, and live insects roughly the size and shape of an apple seed, flat before feeding and rounder after. There is often a distinct sweet, musty smell in a room with a heavy population.
If you brought some home
Move quickly and do not improvise. The two most common mistakes we see in Orlando homes both make the job harder and more expensive:
- Throwing out the mattress. By the time bed bugs are established they are in the frame, the headboard and the baseboards too, and the new mattress gets infested within days. Let someone look first.
- Bug bombs and over-the-counter sprays. Most are repellent, and they scatter a contained population through the walls into other rooms, and in an apartment into the neighbouring unit.
Also worth knowing: bed bugs are not a sanitation problem and have nothing to do with how clean a home is. They need a person to feed on and a crack to hide in, and that is the entire requirement.
Getting them out
A proper treatment starts with an inspection of the whole property, not just the bedroom, because an established population spreads to sofas, recliners and adjoining rooms. Treatment then goes into the harbourage: mattress and box spring seams, frame joints, headboard, baseboards, outlet plates, furniture seams and the underside of case goods. Whole-room heat is a strong option where the property suits it, particularly in furnished vacation rentals that need to go back on the calendar quickly.
And there is always a follow-up. Eggs are cemented into cracks, no product reliably kills them where they sit, and they hatch over roughly one to two weeks. Anyone promising a one-visit cure is selling rather than explaining.
