Wasp, Hornet and Yellow Jacket Control in Orlando

Central Florida gives stinging insects a long season and plenty of places to build. Warm weather most of the year means colonies here get going earlier and stay active later than almost anywhere else in the country, and by late summer a yellow jacket or paper wasp nest can be very large indeed.

What you are likely dealing with

  • Paper wasps. The open, umbrella-shaped comb under an eave, a lanai ceiling, a grill lid, a mailbox or a patio umbrella. The most common call we get.
  • Yellow jackets. Nests underground, in wall voids, in soffits and under decks, with a small entry hole and a lot of traffic. Aggressive when the nest is disturbed and they can sting repeatedly.
  • Bald-faced hornets. The grey papery football hanging in a tree or under a soffit. Very defensive close to the nest.
  • Mud daubers. The tubes of mud on a wall, a shed or under an eave. Almost completely harmless and they prey on spiders, including widows.
  • Honey bees. If it is a honey bee colony in a wall or a tree, that is a job for a beekeeper or a licensed bee removal specialist, not an exterminator. We will tell you that rather than kill it, and a colony left in a wall leaves comb and honey behind that draws roaches, ants and beetles, so removal matters.

Where nests turn up on Orlando homes

Soffit and fascia gaps, the corners of lanai and pool cage framing, under barrel tile, in gable and attic vents, inside irrigation and meter boxes, in barbecue grills and playsets that have not been used for a few weeks, in shed roofs, and in the ground along a fence line or a mulch bed. Ground yellow jacket nests are the ones people find with a lawnmower, which is how most of the bad stings around here happen.

Why nest removal is not a DIY job

The hardware store aerosol is designed to knock down what you can see. It does not reach a colony inside a wall void or three feet down a ground nest, and a partially treated nest is a defensive nest. On top of that, most of these nests are at ladder height on the corner of a roof.

We treat the nest itself, at the right time of day, and where it is inside a structure we treat the void so the colony is dealt with rather than relocated deeper into the wall. Then we remove the nest where it can be removed, because old comb attracts carpet beetles and other secondary pests. Where the same eave gets a nest every year, we can treat preventatively before the season starts.
