Spider Control in Orlando, Florida

Orlando Florida Spider Control Exterminator

Most spiders in an Orlando home are harmless and are there because something else is. Spiders follow their food, so a house with a lot of webs usually has a lot of small flying and crawling insects, often drawn in by exterior lighting at the lanai and garage.

The ones worth knowing in Central Florida

  • Wolf spiders. Big, fast, ground-hunting, no web. They come in under garage doors and through sliders. Alarming, not dangerous.
  • Southern black widow. Glossy black with the red hourglass. Meter boxes, irrigation valve boxes, under patio furniture, in the corners of block walls and sheds. Its bite is a genuine medical matter.
  • Brown widow. Extremely common in Florida and often mistaken for something harmless. Tan and mottled with an orange hourglass, and its egg sac is the giveaway: a spiky, spherical ball like a tiny sea urchin. Under railings, patio chairs and mailboxes.
  • Mediterranean recluse. Established in parts of Florida, usually in older masonry buildings and garages. Worth noting that the brown recluse people worry about is not established here, and the great majority of “recluse bites” diagnosed in Florida turn out to be something else.
  • Golden silk orbweavers and huntsman spiders. Large, dramatic, and beneficial. We are happy to leave them alone if you are.

How we handle spiders

Knocking down webs and spraying baseboards is a temporary fix. What works is treating the perimeter and the harbourage: eaves and soffit corners, the lanai screen frame, garage tracks and door sweeps, meter and valve boxes, under the pool deck, woodpiles, and the block wall or fence line. We also treat for the insects the spiders are eating, because that is what actually reduces the population.

Then the practical part: swap the exterior lights at the doors and lanai for warm or amber bulbs, move the woodpile off the wall, seal the garage sweep, and keep mulch pulled back from the foundation. We will point out the specific ones that matter at your house.

If someone in the house is bitten by a widow, get medical attention. Do not wait to see how it goes.
